Blow (2001)

Blow (2001) is a biographical crime/drama movie about the notorious American cocaine smuggler George Jung, available on Netflix. Blow (slang for cocaine) is directed by Ted Demme, and is based on the 1993 book by journalist Bruce Porter “Blow: How a Small Town Boy Made $100 Million with the Medellin Cocaine Cartel and Lost It All”.

Blow stars Johnny Depp, Penelope Cruz, Franka Potente, Ray Liotta, Jordi Mollà. The film is about the drug culture from the early 70s through the 90s. Blow may have been influenced by similar movies, including Goodfellas, Scarface, Boogie Nights, Traffic, Casino, Requiem for a Dream, and other classics.

Demme took a great cast for the Blow, shot in stunning locations, and delivered truly awesome cinematography.

Blow is a biopic about George Jung, and follows his account from college drifter, to one of the largest cocaine smugglers responsible for 85% of cocaine in the US back in the 1970s, to life prisoner. It is a historical document of George Jung and his life of “drugs, sex and rock ‘n’ roll”, life beyond the law, ultimately leading to destruction.

Blow is a cautionary tale and study of one person’s quest for the better life, which can be seen as an amoral criminal or a nice guy who just made a lot of wrong choices. It’s a fun film to watch until the sad ending – betrayal, defeat, and loneliness.

Edward Kern “Ted” Demme was an American producer, director and actor born in October 1963, in New York City, New York, United States. He died in 2002, after collapsing while playing basketball in Santa Monica, California, United States. Ted was married to Amanda Scheer-Demme, and had to children.

Narcos (2015)

Narcos is an electrifying crime web TV series exclusive to Netflix, created by Chris Brancato, Carlo Bernard, and Doug Miro. Narcos is produced by Gaumont International Television for Netflix. It is one of the biggest global television successes and part of Netflix’s plan for original programming and social media marketing.

This incredibly watchable and addictive TV series is blend of Goodfellas and The Wire, and portrays both side of the law. It is shot by a Colombian crew in Colombia. Narcos cast includes: Wagner Moura as Pablo Escobar, Pedro Pascal as Javier Pena, Boyd Holbrook as Steve Murphy, Paulina Gaitán as Tata Escobar, Joanna Christie as Connie Murphy.

Narcos is a fable about Latin American drug kingpins from the Medellin Cartel, the Cali Cartel and others in the late 1980s, and the violent conflicts of the 80’s war on drugs. The amazing thing about this TV series is that it actually happened, and is a dramatized account based on historical events.

Netflix even released a cell phone game based on “Narcos”. Now anyone can run a drug cartel with Netflix’s Narcos App.
