Pablo Escobar’s wife Tata Escobar (birth name – Maria Victoria Henao) plays a different role in the Netflix TV series Narcos to that of real life Pablo Escobar’s wife, Maria Victoria Henao (nicknamed Tata).

Drug kingpin Pablo Escobar has fascinated people both, before and after his death in 1993. Netflix’s original drama Narcos follows Escobar and his family from the late ’70s up to early ’90s. What happened to Escobar’s family in real life? What was Pablo Escobar’s wife Tata Escobar like in real life? Where are her son Juan Escobar and daughter Manuela Escobar now?

Tata Escobar (born Maria Victoria Henao)

Lovingly nicknamed Tata, Pablo Ecobar wife’s name at birth was Maria Victoria Henao and after marriage. In Spanish, Tata (feminine noun, colloquial) means “nanny” or “maid”.

Maria Victoria “Tata” Escobar (played in the Narcos by Paulina Gaitan) was the real-life Colombian woman behind the infamous Colombian drug lord Pablo Escobar. In Narcos, Tata Escobar grows from her husband’s accessory to Escobar’s advisory and pivotal point of his decision making, and becomes the fearsome matriarch of the Escobar’s household.

In real life, the wife of the famed drug trafficker has lived a quieter, probably not as influential, yet very luxurious life next to her infamous husband.

Tata Escobar’s portrayal on Narcos was aligned with what the crew could piece together about her, yet adapted for cinematic effect. Maria Henao indeed was 15 when she married the 24-year-old Pablo (according to some sources – 26), in 1976. They remained together until his very death in 1993, and her entire life with Escobar Maria was benefiting from his illegal activities. Maria “Tata ” Victoria Henao and Pablo Escobar had two children: Juan Pablo Escobar and Manuela Escobar.

Maria Escobar knew exactly what he was doing, yet had gotten comfortable in the lifestyle of getting anything she could ever dream of. She took advantage of her husband’s assets and all the benefits that huge money brings. Tata lived like a queen at the Hacienda Napoles, flew their private Learjet, could afford super expensive jewelry, clothing etc. Pablo was unfaithful to Maria, both in real life and in Narcos.

In June 1993, Maria Victoria’s brother Carlos Arturo Henao was shot dead outside Medellin airport, reportedly the real target was Pablo Escobar. This happened half a year before Escobar’s death.

After Pablo’s death in December 1993, Tata was summoned by the Rodriguez brothers to a meeting with the Cali Cartel, which was attended by 40+ highest-ranking Mafia bosses in Colombia at the time. The one who saved Juan Escobar mother’s life was Miguel Rodríguez. According to Pablo Escobar’s son, Tata had to give up everything. Then Cali gave her and her kids a short amount of time to leave Colombia, or stay and become a target.

The family left Colombia and changed their names. Maria “Tata” changed her name to Victoria Henao Vallejos, and later to Maria Isabel Santos Caballero. Her son Juan changed his name to Sebastian Marroquin. Her daughter Manuela changed her name to Juana Manuela Marroquin Santos. The family traveled to different countries, including Ecuador, Peru and Brazil before ending up in Argentina.

For several years, until 1999 they lived in an apartment in Buenos Aires, Argentina, until a local TV show revealed their identities and their presence in Argentina. Police staked out their apartment in Nunez (neighbourhood of Buenos Aires, Argentina) for several months. After that, Maria and her son were arrested for laundering money sent by Columbian drug lords in Uruguay; Pablo Escobar’s wife and children were believed to have amassed around $1 billion in net worth. Maria and her son were arrested and spent 15 months in jail for money laundering. Tata told the press: “[Argentina] want to prove that Argentina is combating drug trafficking.” The 1999 charges were later dismissed. In his book, Juan Escobar writes that those were trumped-up charges.

Not much is known about Tata Escobar’s life beyond that point.

In the TV Series Narcos, Tata is played by a talented actress and producer Paulina Gaitan born on February, 1992 in Mexico City, Distrito Federal, Mexico. Paulina Gaitan is known for Trade (2007), Sin Nombre (2009), Señorita Pólvora (2015) and Narcos (2015 – 2016). Sin Nombre (2009) is another good film about escaping Mexican drug gangs.

Manuela Escobar – Maria “Tata” and Pablo Escobar’s Daughter

From her birth in 1984 to Escobar’s death in 1993, Manuela was the light of her father’s world, and his little princess. Escobar allegedly forced one of his mistresses her pregnancy from him, because he had promised that Manuela would be the last of his line.

Pablo Escobar’s daughter, Manuela Escobar, has also stayed out of the media since the 1999 incident in Buenos Aires. Did Manuela Escobar inherit anything from Pablo? Did he really burn $2 million to keep Manuela warm, when she was a child? We don’t know.

Manuela Escobar’s net worth, Tata Escobar’s net worth and Juan Pablo Escobar’s net worth are hard to estimate. Nnobody knows for sure whether Maria Victoria Henao (Tata Escobar) had managed to accumulate any wealth, or parted with the remains of Pablo Escobar’s net worth as was claimed.

Juan Pablo Escobar – Pablo Escobar and Tata Escobar’s Son

Juan Pablo Escobar (changed his name to Sebastian Marroquin ) became an architect in Argentina. In 2009, he participated in Nicolas Entel’s documentary “Sins of My Father.” In 2014, Sebastian released “Pablo Escobar: My Father”, where he revealed the softer side of the murderous drug kingpin. After watching the second season of “Narcos,” Escobar’s son posted 28 factual errors and claimed that Narcos “insults the history.”

Sebastian (Juan) ways that his father never forced him or his little sister to stay with him in the underground, and his father Pablo Escobar and mother Tata Escobar (nee Maria Victoria Henao) always advised them to get educated and have other opportunities in life, different from their parents’.
